Methods of Saving Your Photos

By Matthew Rivers

There are several methods of backing up your digital photos, but you'll find that all of them have pros and cons. If you're depending on one method alone, you should consider a second option to be sure you have back ups no matter what happens. From all of these options, I'm sure you'll be able to find a way to save your photos that works for you.

Using a DVD Collection

Having enough DVDs on hand to archive all of your photos is essential for digital photography. In fact, digital images saved on your camera's memory card is as important as the negatives in the old film cameras. For most of us, our collection from years ago completely unorganized, making photos we would like to re-edit almost impossible to find! With a good plan, however, you'll be able to easily store and find photos any time you need them.

With your collection on DVD, the only downside is the possibility that your backup photo discs could be damaged by a catastrophic event such as a hurricane, tornado, earthquake or fire. In this case, both your computer and backup discs could possibly be destroyed together. But, if coupled with online storage, this inexpensive method might be an easy way to keep your photos are safe.

Using a Hard Drive

The drawback to this method is the cost of an external hard drive, which is usually less than $100, but is not your least expensive option. With free online photo sharing sites, you're in good hands. But, if you have thousands of images, the cost of purchasing an archive CD from a "free" photo site could exceed the cost of an external drive.

Just like photos on DVD, images on hard drives might also be destroyed if something were to happen to your home. More common, though, is a problem with power surges or even a failure with your surge protector. Also, more rare, is the possibility of theft with a small external drive.

Cloud Storage

With online backup, one deterrent could be the cost. If you haven't chosen the right service, you might not be able to recover your images in full resolution. Discovering that your images have been dropped from the free service can also be crushing, if you haven't made a purchase from the site recently. But, probably the worst option is seeing your work, slightly modified, because someone hacked into the cloud service. It's probably not a problem for most people, but it may become more common in the future.

With each of these methods, none is perfect. Yet, choosing what is best for you will be the solution when combined with more than one method alone. Rest at ease when you have more than one plan in place for any problems that might arise.
