Choosing Subjects for Better Photos

By Jewel Chesson

There is an art to finding the most photogenic subjects. Macro photography will give you fantastic results when taking photos of things like flowers.

How do I find that great subject?

You might find great subjects when on a walk. If you enjoy capturing the beauty of flowers you can find amazing subjects in the display case of your local store. No one will care if you are taking photos but if you are concerned you can ask permission before you begin. Garden centers are also wonderful places to find exceptional subjects. You may also find some very interesting shots of flowers including those who enjoy touching them or smelling them. This is a place to find plenty of variety as well.

You may find plenty of inspiration in wild life areas. Parks are filled with interesting subjects for your photos but you can find amazing subjects in an abandoned field or empty lot with the occasional single flower that makes its way through dry, cracked ground or even black top. Tiny little flowers will grow almost anywhere and even weeds have blossoms that are quite beautiful like clover and dandelions. These can make great close-ups.

Make sure to have your camera everywhere if you enjoy flower pictures. You could stumble across the perfect photo opportunity everywhere. You could get loss in your amount of options in a flower show. Even walking through malls can present opportunities like flower planters or restaurants that place flowers on their tables. These make very interesting and dramatic photos. Great opportunities are always presenting themselves.

The Best Point of View for Your Subjects.

Positioning yourself for the optimal shot takes some technique and some practice. Your viewpoint is actually a very important element in the creative process. If you find something interesting to you, you have probably found the best view point for your shot. From where you were standing, after all, was where the subject caught your eye. Right there, or nearby is probably the perfect position. If your photo will be of landscape or cars or models then angles are a big consideration.

With landcapes, you can experiment with different positions, and with objects, you can experiment by replacing the object in a different background. When considering position, think about the lighting. You may already have a perfect vantage point without soft boxes or reflectors. You can find your distance, your angle and your perfect viewpoint by using your creative eye. Great photos are due to the creative instincts of the photographer.
