Saving Old Memories By Digitizing Photos

By Lynda Ratliff

Photos have a strong value in keeping important moments alive for individuals and families for years after the moment has passed. The problem with older photographs is that in time they fade or decay as the chemicals and paper age. With modern technology people are digitizing photos so they can keep those moments for the future.

With a computer, a scanner and the proper software you can capture and restore old images from conventional photographs. The digital files can be used in any computer, on most DVD players and printed out to photographic quality paper. There is also no limitation on the amount of copies or forms once a photo has been digitized.

The scanner is the primary tool you will need for capturing the photographs you want to keep. Avoid using hand held scanners and instead invest in a flat bed scanner for the best in image capturing tools. The unit should be USB 2.0 and have as high a resolution as you can get for the best quality. Some units can even capture and save the photographs without the use of a computer to an external hard drive or USB drive.

While some photo scanners do not need a computer to make images it would be a good idea to use one for editing purposes. This is especially true if you have faded or damaged photos that would need computer enhancement to clear up. A computer with the proper software will allow you to bring out the best in your photos as well as restore them without any glitches.

There is one important thing to do before you finish this project which is to make multiple copies of the scanned and restored pictures. You have preserved the images but if you have it in only one location you could easily lose them. With the various ways to back up digital files whether on the internet or with some other method of storage there is no reason not to have another copy to back up your memories.

Memories can not be replaced but they can be copied for the future. The effort and cost of digitizing photos is minimum compared to the alternative of losing some precious memories. It is easy to get the tools and to take the simple steps that will let you keep the pictures of your life safe.
