Learning From Free Online Acoustic Guitar Lessons

By Rosella Campbell

One of the most famous instruments would be none other than the guitar because there are so many people who play it and there are so many people who want to learn how to play it. Now before the internet was made available, people had to pay teachers to teach them the basics of playing this instruments. Nowadays, one can actually get free online acoustic guitar lessons in order to get the basics down.

Now if one has never tried one of these things before, then here are some things to expect. Now in a nutshell, these online lessons would be making use of videos and just some text. Although most of the time the lessons would be in video form, there are times that there would be text so that one will be able to practice when he is not in front of the computer.

Of course since there is no personal teacher involved, then one will actually have to rely on videos for visuals. The videos will be showing the viewers how the proper hand position is and how the proper hand movement is. The video is there for the purpose of making sure that the student will fully understand the lesson.

Now with these two mediums, the online teacher will be able to teach the viewers just the very basics of playing guitars. Now the first lesson would usually be about the parts of the guitar with high emphasis on the strings because the strings would make the sounds. Of course the videos would be showing the viewer how each string sounds like when plucked.

After he has learned of the different strings, he will now be combining the sounds of the strings together to form a more solid sound. This solid sound is the result of playing a chord. Now one will be learning the two types of basic chords namely the major chords and the minor chords.

Once one has already learned the chords and how to strum the guitar, the next thing one will be learning would be finger picking. If one would want a less uniform sound or a more relaxed sound, then one will definitely have to rely on finger picking. The video will be teaching viewers how to position the hands in order to do this.

After learning finger picking, one will now be merging both of the techniques and would be now playing a simple song. Now one would most likely be playing a very short song first since it is his first time to play the guitar. He will most likely learn a song with an intro that requires easy finger picking and a chorus that requires strumming of basic chords.

Now if one would want to really delve into the art of playing the guitar, nothing will replace real lessons. If one would just want to learn the basics so that he will be able to jam with his friends in parties or gatherings, then internet lessons will suffice. These internet lessons will be able to teach viewers the basics of playing the instrument really fast.

It's All in Your Head, Part 2: A Guide to Choosing Drumheads That Are Right for You

By Vic Salazar

In part 1 of my article about drumheads, I shared details about the number of plies in drumheads and how they affect their durability and sound. This week, I'll cover 3 additional elements of drumheads: muffling, coatings, and bottom drumheads.

Pre-Muffled or Wide-Open Drumheads

Drumheads now exist with built-in muffling to reduce unwanted overtones, which is achieved is by applying a ring of material like Mylar to the drumhead's top or underside. Evans, a leading supplier of drumheads, offers a version with tiny-sized holes or vents along the perimeter that get rid of overtones by moving air through the membrane. Evans also offers a unique head that utilizes a thin layer of oil between the two plies of their Hydraulic series to achieve a muffled tone.

Keep in mind that these pre-muffled heads don t change the pitch of the drum when it's tuned: they only remove unwanted superfluous frequencies. Pre-muffled heads can also help to prevent the need for other means of muffling, like gaffer tape.

Clear or Coated Drumheads

Coated drumheads are spray-painted clear heads. While clear drumheads have more sustain than coated heads, coated drumheads have a sharper attack that accentuates the sound of the stick striking the drumhead surface (this is the primary reason why drummers traditionally use a coated drumhead on their snare drum).

If you're playing with brushes, you definitely need to use a coated head for brush response. A coated head also has a more dampened presence than a clear head - which makes sense since a coated head has an extra layer of materiel applied to its surface.

Resonant or Bottom/Front Head

You get your pitch from the top or batter head and your sustain from the bottom drumhead, so you'd usually only have a single-ply head on the bottom of your tom and snare drum and on the front of your bass drum.

Snare drum resonant drumheads are specifically made for the underside of your snare. They're ultra-thin and not made to be struck. This thinness helps to enhance vibration and sensitivity to your snare wires.

(FYI, never install a single-ply batter drumhead on the underside of your snare drum - unless you want it to sound like a choked cardboard box!)

The Right Stick for the Right Job: Finding Drumsticks that are Best Constructed for Your Style of Drumming

By Victor Salazar

Drumsticks are one of a drummer's most vital tools. They're our direct connection to our drum kit. Without the proper drumstick, many drummers can't play comfortably or to the best of their abilities.

Over the years, I've spoken with drummers - from beginners to professionals - who've had problems with their drumsticks. Either they were experiencing cramps in their hands or their sticks were literally flying out of their hands because they were unable to hold onto them while playing. Interestingly, many of these drummers only experienced these issues during live performances. And in almost every situation, it turned out that each drummer was simply using the wrong size drumstick. Once they used the right size drumstick, all of their problems were resolved.

A lot of drummers select drumsticks based on how fast they can play with them. Many of us want to blaze around the set displaying dazzling single stroke rolls. So it would seem logical to select the lightest stick with the least amount of mass in order to play with maximum speed and agility, correct?

Not necessarily.

The main reason why you may develop hand cramps is because you're using a stick that's too thin and lightweight for your playing style. The harder you hit, the looser your grip should naturally become. This will prevent injuries and allow the stick to absorb more of the impact. However, if you play hard with a thin and light stick and attempt to relax your grip, one of two things usually happens: either you develop a cramp or you lose the ability to hold onto your stick.

You can't hold a thin stick in a loose and relaxed manner and play hard: it's physically not possible, and the outcome will be sticks that will fly out of your hands. Conversely, if you try to hang on tightly to a light and thin stick while you hit hard, you'll immediately develop cramps.

The best resolution is to use a heavier and larger stick: you won't have to hold it as tightly and it won't go airborne on you. You'll also be pleasantly surprised that you won't lose speed/power/accuracy despite the increase in mass and weight.

In terms of why drummers have certain problems that only happen in a live setting, it's because many drummers unknowingly morph their playing approach. Their adrenaline surges, their blood pumps, and they reflect the crowd's energy by hitting harder than they normally do during rehearsals and practice sessions.

That's when the glitches kick in, and as you can imagine, playing live is the worst time for things to go wrong with your performance. Heavier sticks offer a solution to these common dilemmas.

To see if heavier sticks are best for you, try this test: when you're demo-ing new sticks on a practice pad, use a model that's a little heavier than you think you need. You'll be surprised to learn that you'll be able to play with confidence, ease, and plenty of speed/power. Your drumsticks will also probably even last a bit longer (saving some cash is just an additional perk of using the right drumsticks).

(BTW, Dave Grohl drums hard, plays with speed, and almost never seems to miss where he's hitting. While in Nirvana, he used Aquarian Power-Sleeve 2Bs, a durable, heavy drumstick. Today, he still uses a large drumstick, his Zildjian Dave Grohl Artist Series model, which is well-suited for his energetic style.)

Should you have any questions or need specific tips regarding your drumstick decisions or dilemmas, feel free to reach out. I'm always here to help!

Gringo Soul - Band Interview

By Jake O'neil

Recently I interviewed Brandon Giannasi, a solo artist from Dallas, TX, who goes by the name "Gringo Soul." Brandon finds a great deal of musical inspiration in acts such as Nirvana, Sublime, Elvis, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, and also finds a great deal of inspiration from art itself, like from the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh for example. Theses artists and more inspire Brandon during his process of writing his songs, which he describes as "funky" and "soulful." Brandon's stage name, Gringo Soul, comes from a time is his past when we was working with a group of Hispanic people who referred to him and other Caucasians as "Gringos." The word rand with him and he decided to, as he puts it, "roll with it."

Brandon performs with his Korg Keyboard, guitar, loop pedal, K oscillator, and octopad. During a performance, the crowd gets to see him set up each and every component that goes into a Gringo Soul song, one piece at a time. At the time of this interview, Gringo Soul is at a whopping 4 album releases and 34 songs. I asked Brandon what songs ultimately are about. "As an average Gringo," Giannasi says he writes his songs about life lessons, celebrations, hardships, and his growth as a musician. When I asked him about his writing process, he tells me that "there's just something about driving that really gets me thinking, gets my creative juices flowing." He tells me that most of his lyrics writing and creative thinking comes to him while driving.

This year, Gringo Soul is hosting an event on June 28th called "The Trash Bash Music Stash." The event is a concert held after a volunteer trash pickup along three streets in Dallas, and includes free food and drinks for all of those participating. For the less socially motivated concert-goer, tickets are also available for the concert alone for only $15.

Aside from this event, Brandon has played many shows in Dallas and the surrounding area. "I'd have to say that one of my favorite shows I've played so far was in Forth Worth at The Woodshed. I ended up performing for about five hundred people who all seemed to respond well both to me and to my music." Brandon also tells me that if he could open for any one band, it would be Stone Temple Pilots. "I have a lot of respect for their music, and that would really be an honor if I ever get to play s show with them."

As a final thought, I asked Brandon what advice he might have for his fellow independent musicians. "If you're in a band and struggling to find an audience, or if you're interested in starting a band - if or when you get denied to play a venue or bar, you just need to stay strong. Get back up, and get on with your day."

It's All in Your Head, Part One: A Guide to Selecting Drumheads That Are Perfect for Your Needs

By Vic Salazar

In this 2 part article, I'm going to detail some general guidelines to help you select the right drumheads that will match your particular requirements.

Drumheads are one of the most critical elements of your drum. The type of drumhead that you select will determine the overall sound that your drum will produce. By installing a new drumhead, you can bring a drum "back to life" by adding tone and projection that were lost by using a worn, deteriorated head. You can also energize the sound of a less expensive drum by replacing its stock head with a new, professional-quality one.

Prior to the mid 1950s, drumheads were made of animal hides, like calfskin. This totally changed when the DuPont Company created a polyester film they called Mylar. By employing this plastic film instead of an animal skin, drumhead manufacturers such as Remo and Evans made creative sonic options possible for drummers while adding consistency in quality and tone that wasn't previously possible. With calfskin heads, drummers had to deal with the frequent need to retune their drums due to weather and temperature fluctuations. Plastic drumheads almost entirely eliminated this inconvenience.

Today, plastic drumheads are utilized not just on drum sets but also on timpani, marching drums, and timbales, as well as hand drums like congas, bongos, djembes, darbukas, frame drums, surdos, pandeiros, doumbeks, tambourines, and caixas.

Number of Plies

The first thing to choose when selecting heads for your drum set is head weight. Single-ply heads offer a bright sound with longer resonance and sustain, while two-ply drumheads yield a darker, fatter sound with better durability. If you're a heavy hitter and want a lower, more controlled tone out of your drum, you may want to go with a two-ply head. If you're a finessed player and want to hear more overtones, you might use a single-ply head.

(NOTE: There are variations to this approach. For instance, you might play heavy rock but prefer the sound that a single-ply drumhead produces. I personally use single-ply heads and hit pretty hard - which means that I need to switch my heads more frequently than if I was using 2-ply drumheads.)

Other types of drumheads include:

Dot - This drumhead features an additional dot-shaped ply (approx. diameter 5") in the middle. The dot can give you the durability of a 2-ply head, but with a sound more like that of a single-ply drumhead because only one layer of plastic sits on the drum's bearing edge. Drumhead companies like Remo, Evans, Aquarian, Ludwig, and Attack all produce their own versions of a head with a reinforcement dot.

Three-ply - Aquarian recently introduced a 3-ply head for players who require the ultimate in durability. Obviously, this head produces an extremely dark and lower fundamental pitch.

Next week in Part 2, I'll go over drumhead muffling, coating, and bottom heads. In the meantime, if you have any questions or require specific advice regarding your drumhead decisions or dilemmas, feel free to reach out. I'm always here to help!

Some Information Regarding High End Speaker Cables

By Rosella Campbell

The quality of sound produced by speakers and various systems matters a lot. There are a variety of factors that contribute to the production of desired output from any speaker out there. Some people argue that high end speaker cables are the secret behind a good sound experience in any location. Whether one is at home or at an entertainment venue, having the right types of interconnects for your audio equipment is very important.

People love their music and others cannot imagine living without it for a single day. This normally translates to the occurrence of die hard audiophiles that value their occasional audio listening experience every now and then. To achieve this, one must have a fully functional and complete speaker sound system that gives out the desired audio output.

Having quality audio to accompany visual output is quite a favorite complement and an experience to die for. People who love this state of listening to good and quality sound from any source such as music should be using the above cables for their sound systems. The wires play a big role in the whole set up and poor cables and wires do not help in any way to better the output of audio.

All the interconnection is achieved using a wide range of cables that are specifically made to do this work. These cables are made to carry electric signals using the principles of resistance, impedance and magnitude. The physics behind the functioning of a speaker wire is very complicated and is best left for the understanding of the professionals and audio engineers.

The inter connections that one chooses to use for their entertainment station will determine what kind of audio output comes from the speakers in place. The right kind of wires helps a lot to rectify and transmit the appropriate electric signals in the desired amounts. Electricity is behind it all as sound is transmitted through electric signals.

The production of these wires is done on a small scale because they are reserved for those people who seek perfection in their audio listening experiences. The wires and cables do not come cheap at all and they fetch quite some money when they are on sale in various stores and outlets all over the country. It is wise old saying that the good things in life do not come cheap and this is well observed in such a scenario.

With that said, some people may still ask whether these cables make much difference from the ordinary or average interconnects in the market. Researchers and engineers have carried out various tests and they have also done extensive research into the subject topic and the result has been a mixture of findings that support both motions.

There are several well known and established companies and manufactures of these premium audio wires. Most of them are actually manufacturers of other audio equipment so they are quite capable and experienced in the subject field of specialization. The products do not come cheap at all and may cause a lot of damage on the pockets of the individuals who choose to purchase them.
